The city of Lawrence rolled out a public art exhibit in April to celebrate art, charity, and the ubiquitous symbol of the town's university. CLO is part of the fun.

Jayhawks on Parade is modeled after public art events held in recent years in Chicago and Kansas City (both had Cows on Parade); Little Rock (featuring hogs); Lindsborg, Kansas (celebrating the Swedish Dala horses symbolic of its heritage). Now Lawrence has a flock of 30 special Jayhawks on display all over town.

Businesses an individuals paid $4500 each to sponsor a jayhawk. The four-and-a-half foot tall fiberglass statues were decorated by local designers and artists, and talented University of Kansas alumni.

When the exhibition comes down in October, most of the sponsors are donating their Jayhawks to non-profit organizations, which can then auction them to raise money. In addition to providing art entertainment for Lawrence citizens and visitors, the birds have the potential to raise many thousands of dollars for groups that include CLO.

Cork and Barrel, a popular Lawrence wine and spirits store at the corner of 23rd and Iowa, is one of the sponsors. Owner Dan Blomgran chose CLO's Early Childhood Autism Program (ECAP©) to be the beneficiary of Cork and Barrel's Jayhawk because ECAP serves one of the children of his best friend.

CLO plans to hold a late Autumn fundrasing event to auction off the multi-colored "Abstr-hawk-tion" statue, the work of local artist, Eric Hoins.
