"Our son exhibited extremely challenging behaviors as he grew older and larger in size. This directly impacted his ability to participate at school and home in spite of untold numbers of interventions. We felt that we needed to do something to help him and our family. We wanted to find an environment that was like a family while having the supports to manage significant behaviors. We feel lucky to have found CLO and the Family Teaching Model. Our son now has greatly reduced behavior, is more independent, is successful at high school and even has jobs he performs at school and in the community while having the high support he needs. We are proud of him and he is proud of himself. The positive changes for him and our family are what we had dreamed of finding someday." Thank you, CLO!"

CLO Family Teaching Model
The Family Teaching Model (FTM) is a successful adaptation of the
world-renowned Teaching Family Model used for years by many youth
service organizations such as Girls and Boys Town. The FTM was adapted
for people with disabilities right here at the University
of Kansas by Dr. James Sherman, Dr.
Jan Sheldon and Dr. Michael Strouse.
CLO started using the model in the mid 1990s in an attempt to improve
our more traditional Group Home oriented services.
The model was implemented with the active collaboration of the
Applied Behavioral Sciences department at the
University of Kansas.
The FTM is designed to produce eleven positive outcomes for the
people being served.
- Opportunities for choice
- Effective learning opportunities
- Effective communication
- Positive relationships
- Pleasant social environments
- Pleasant and safe surroundings
- High level of participation in daily experiences
- Satisfied consumers
- Living healthy lifestyles
- Observance of personal and legal rights
- Community Involvement.
