United Way's Tenth Annual Day of Caring inspires overwhelming support for CLO

United Way's 10th Annual Day of Caring proved valuable for CLO

A beautiful weekend in June, a great mission and dedicated volunteers from charitable companies proved to be the perfect combination for the tenth annual United Way Day of Caring. The event contributed to a much needed extreme landscaping makeover to CLO homes. Numerous volunteers from Garmin International, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Shawnee Mission Post Office,UMB Bank and the DLR Group worked tirelessly in creating a true landscaping masterpiece to be enjoyed by the men and women served in the homes. The project produced scenic landscaped yards, lovely flowerbeds, many new trees and shrubs, and even culminated in a paved sitting area and a beautiful water garden for the Marty and Lane Homes.

Volunteers engaged in many beautification projects, such as weeding and mulching, to enhance the landscape of the homes.

Yolanda Hargett, a CLO senior administrator, organized and coordinated the implementation of the project. In the past, our landscaping efforts were always limited by the high-cost investment of materials and labor. Donations from the Pavestone Company and H&R Lawn and Landscape made the project possible. Now, thanks to this perfectly organized event and the kindness of the volunteers and donors, our men and women can enjoy all the benefits of having a truly beautiful garden with a variety of flowers with a high sensory value. In addition caring for the plants and maintaining this beautiful environment will have a great therapeutic value for the men and women in the homes.

Adam Lee, staff writer of the Johnson County Sun, wrote an article about the CLO and the United Way Day of Caring. That article can be accesed here.

The men and women from the following homes benefited from the United Way Day of Caring:

  • Benson House
A CLO staff member assists a Lane Home resident with adding fish to the new water garden.
  • Conser House
  • Lane House
  • Marty House
  • Mastin House
  • Southpark House

CLO would like to thank the companies, guardians, family members, staff and friends that participated in the tenth annual United Way Day of Caring!
