"I appreciate the efforts of this commission on behalf of children with disabilities. Through the work of the Commission, Kansans will gain a greater awareness of autism and help those with the disorder lead a better quality of life," Parkinson said.
The Commission on Autism advises and makes recommendations to the governor in regard to matters related to autism, families with an autistic child, and service providers. Autism is a complex developmental disability that typically appears during the first three years of life and affects a person’s ability to communicate and interact with others. Autism is defined by a certain set of behaviors and is a "spectrum disorder" that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees.
