NPOs Helping People With Developmental Disabilities

Everyone has equal rights in this world, but sadly not everyone is born with equal abilities. There are millions of people in this world who are faced with various disabilities which could really hamper their living conditions and their lives as a whole and this is why there are many NPOs that focus on helping those who have developmental disabilities so that they do not have to live on the fringes of society. There is a lot to be said about such NPOs and here is a list of those that deal with such issues.

  • Adaptive Environments Center

This is an international NPO that works at promoting, facilitating and advocating certain programs and policies that enables every individual to fully participate in society regardless of age or ability. This organization aeworks on a global scale to work with educational institutions and various fields like transportation, employment, design and more to bring out change in the way people with disabilities are encouraged to enter various disciplines and fields of work. This organization looks at being a source of information and implementation for Americans with disabilities Act, on universal design education, home modifications and more.

  • Abilis

This is an organization that is fully run, controlled and represented by disabled people and looks to giving funding to projects of disabled people in various developing countries. It is a nongovernmental, non-profit organization that has expertise in many areas.

  • Easter Seals

This international NPO focuses on providing services and assistance to people with special needs, especially for people with autism. Their main Easter-Sealsobjective is to raise awareness on autism and also to provide services like job training, substance abuse programs, residential housing, adult day programs for adults with severe mental disabilities and also therapy for all types of disabilities. The increasing presence of autism in recent years has made Easter Seals to double their efforts in providing therapy and services to people with Autism. It is mostly run in the English speaking Western world like Canada, the US, Australia and the UK.

  • ARC

This is an organization that serves people who have intellectual and developmental disabilities. Founded in the 1950s by parents of individuals with developmental disabilities, it has now grown to have its chapters in states all over the US and operates on a budget of 2 million. It started by raising awareness about the people who had developmental disabilities and their support families as well as community programs that dealt with the same. It helped in creating a positive public perception towards children and adults with mental retardation and worked to obtain services for them which were otherwise denied to them like day care, pre-school, education and work programs.

  • The Kessler Foundation

It is one of America’s largest public charities which support people with disabilities. /the Kessler Foundation Research Center has many research programs that look into improving the function and quality of life for Printpeople suffering from spinal cord injuries, brain injuries, strokes, multiple sclerosis and more. It also distributes millions of dollars to various programs that promote the employment of people with disabilities. It was established in 1985 and its ‘Transition to Work’ initiative has proved to be
invaluable over the years.

  • We Connect Now

Created in 2008, ‘We Connect Now’ is dedicated to uniting people interested in rights and issues that many people with disabilities are affected with. The main goal is to help college going students with disabilities to succeed in their studies by offering the support they may need in terms of information, resources and personal contacts.

I was never the do good for people kind of person. Call me selfish, but I always believed it was a ‘Man eats Man’ kind of world. Survival of the fittest, you know? I worked in the world of finance and it was great. Action, deals that changed hands and banks that could make the annual budgets of many companies look like peanuts – I was proud of what I did and I couldn’t see myself in any other role but the one I had.
